Sixty-four images of Otsushima, an island in Tokuyama Bay in the Seto Inland Sea that was the training site of the kaiten, the manned torpedo used in the last year of Japan's war effort. Having visited the island in his early twenties, Hitoshi Uemoto was confronted with the unimaginable realities faced by the young men enlisted in the Special Attack Forces of the Imperial military, in training and in the suicide missions that were their ultimate purpose. The book is a psychological portrait, an attempt to make sense of a reality far removed from the materialist era in which the photographer was born. The afterword is in Japanese and English.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
