Photographs made between 1993 and 2003. In the essay included in the book, Yoshitoki Irisawa places Kanji Mizutani among the photographers who came after Daido Moriyama, among them Seiji Kurata, Michio Yamauchi, Keizo Kitajima, Hiroyasu Nakai and Koji Onaka, who in one way or another fall within Moriyama's force of anonymity, and yet notes that Mizutani alone gives off a different feeling. Mizutani first met Moriyama at a workshop and held a first solo exhibition on Moriyama's recommendation; the essay asks what is new and amazing about this landscape-centred photography of perspective, which appears free of contradiction, and sees it as an undertaking of contemporary expression.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
