Born and raised in a bedtown in Japan's Kanto region, with its large belt of highway running through, Mari Matsumoto grew up looking at the same sort of landscapes as many others of the generation. Fancying foreign lands, the photographer embarked on trips abroad, and stepping outside made clear how Japanese the photographer is and awakened an awareness of the country's unique allure. The book consists of fragments of scenes that occurred in some corner of Japan during the first decade of the twenty-first century. It reveals a love for the homeland that was not conscious at the time, and a desire to know more of the country and to affirm it.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
