Setting out on a journey and taking photographs means carving into oneself the deep impressions of various encounters. In the afterword Tamiko Nishimura describes a well-worn camera with a 35 mm wide-angle lens: on first setting foot in an unfamiliar town she takes in the light, the wind and the air with her whole body, more than the landscape before her eyes, and then starts walking. When travelling she often chances upon weddings or funerals, and especially loves the sight of a happy bride; she presses the shutter sometimes intoxicated, or perhaps dancing. Photographs need no explaining, she writes: they are much more loquacious and free than we think.
