Photographs of the shaft winder of a coal mine where Shincei Yamamoto spent childhood. Even now that the mine has finished its role the machine still stands tall; reduced to the skeleton of a dinosaur, it gazes down in silence. In the afterword Yamamoto writes of the emptiness of having lost something irreplaceable, and that only now, awake from that dream, can a conversation with the winder begin; the history of a disappearing coal mine is something to be kept in photographs. The statement recalls returning to the place of the photographer's youth for the first time in 25 years, when coal mines everywhere were disappearing, and finding the winder still there: with camera and eye a subject is caught, time is stopped and a skin of light is affixed to it, as has been Yamamoto's work for twenty years.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
