For this first photobook Naohiro Yasui spent twenty years photographing the trees settled firmly into the urban Tokyo landscape, as communal places, as part of the scenery and as defiance against the concrete; by looking at these trees one of Tokyo's many sides quietly emerges into view. In the artist's statement Yasui calls them oases that offer brief moments of respite: occasionally a deep forest turns up in the middle of the city, and through the encounters with all these trees the manifold aspects of Tokyo could be discerned.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
