Koji Otsuka's second photobook is a nihilistic look at the emptiness within a city filled to the brim with people and objects. The high-contrast street snaps were taken in and around Tokyo in the mid-2000s and open our eyes to the reality we live in. In the afterword Otsuka describes the Japanese character for sky seen just outside the window of the room where he had drifted to, a character that, depending on how it is read, can also mean air, space, emptiness or the void; it seemed to peer over the wall from the other side and to ask him questions.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
