Black-and-white photographs of Masahide Kobayashi's travels through the mountains surrounding the photographer's birth town of Mimasaka, a mountain city in the north-east of Okayama Prefecture on the border with Hyogo and Tottori. In the afterword Kobayashi writes that between 2012 and 2018 he drove along these mountain roads, gathering the landscapes of the area on camera: certain places were old familiar haunts, while others had changed so utterly that it felt like the first time he had set foot there. Contemplated through the landscapes and photographs, those days grew into an experience mingling nostalgia and freshness, as if he were continually renewing an old map in his mind.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
