Relying only on the moon to light his photographs, Katsuhito Nakazato captured scenes on Japan's coasts that strip them of almost all familiar earthliness and cast them anew as what they are: the results of volcanic activity on a rock in space. The images do not lack romance or beauty, and their combinations of colours, forms and shapes speak of Nakazato's aesthetic sense. In the afterword Osamu Ishiyama points to similarities with Japan's medieval dry landscape gardens and with ink paintings influenced by the Chinese Song dynasty, noting a tinge of animism and exceedingly orthodox techniques of creation that are rarely seen in photography.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
