This book publishes for the first time the work Mathieu Pernot made in Romania in 1998 as part of a Villa Médicis hors les murs grant. This journey, a singular episode in the author's work, reveals with simplicity the strength of places and the power of the faces he faced, and the photographs offer a silent glide over the reality of the Roma communities of Eastern Europe. "Twenty years passed before I tamed these images and unearthed them from the binder where they were kept as negatives, a long and necessary time to rid myself of the feeling of not having gone beyond a simple brushing of the real. Today it is impossible for me to name the people or to identify the places in these pages. I perceive nothing but the memory of ephemeral encounters, the strength of places and the power of the faces that faced me. These images were made in another time in the history of photography, at the end of a century when you had to develop the shots in a darkroom to see them appear, a time when the model did not see the image made of him instantly, when the photographer could himself decide to wait years to reveal them." Co-published with the Hôtel des Arts in Toulon on the occasion of the exhibition Survivances.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
