Le village andalou traces the fate of a Catalan-origin Roma community exiled from Francoist Spain, passing through Algeria before settling in Bordeaux in 1964. Rehoused several times, thirty-seven families landed in 1990 in a housing estate built on a former landfill, ringed by marshland and isolated from the city: the "Village andalou". Conceived as a step toward integration, the site quickly took on the look of a segregated camp; in 2001, after reports denouncing insalubrity and lead poisoning, the authorities ordered its demolition and the families were scattered across the Bordeaux metropolitan area. Photographer Christophe Goussard documented this story from 1993 to 2001 through trust built with residents via photo workshops with the village's children, leaving behind nearly two hundred black-and-white silver prints, intimate portraits of a community caught between memory, resistance and relegation.
