A snow-covered rock face, a flooded stand of trees, a damp sandbank, a break of light, silhouettes lost in the landscape: every photograph by Bernard Descamps is an invitation to travel and to contemplation. Trained as a biologist and an indefatigable walker, he has spent decades crossing Africa, Japan, Madagascar and Iceland to meet people and landscapes, working in black and white and in square format, his pared-down imagery playing with line, emptiness and detail to build images somewhere between the real and the imagined.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
