Les Carnets series

An in-depth interview with Matt Wilson, tracing his path and the evolution of his practice. The conversation revisits the pivotal encounter with the gallerist who championed his work from 2009 at the Galerie Les Filles du Calvaire, a defining moment in which he began to establish his place. Trained in New York as an assistant to Erez Sabag, he developed a rigorous technical mastery of the darkroom that remains at the heart of his visual language; his approach favours intuition, the sensory experience of landscape and the pursuit of an immediate emotional response over any documentary intent. His pictures often emerge from a prolonged immersion in a place — in Normandy during the Planches Contact residency in Deauville, later at the Moulin Blanchard in the Perche. Working mainly in analogue, he explores the aesthetic possibilities of film, printing and darkroom processes; often small in size, his images establish an intimate relation with the viewer, evoking both the painterly tradition from Courbet to Corot and certain major figures of the medium.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
