Introduction by José-Manuel Gonçalvès
Foreword by Mathieu Pernot

In April 2015, as the last prisoners were being transferred, Pernot visited the historic La Santé prison in Paris several times. He photographed the entire building and went through all the empty cells to make an inventory of the graffiti and images still on the walls. These traces convey the presence of their authors and reveal the intimate lives of those who were held there.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
