Reverb is a proposition imagined around the first series of Nicolas Comment, photographer and singer-songwriter. The images dialogue here with literature, poetry and the very object that is the photobook. Among those he has made are La desserte (2001), Le point (2003), L'oiseleur (2003), A*** (2004), Fading (2006) and Est-ce l'Est (2008), his Berlin romance. "The images of Reverb, full of grain and intermediate lights, were all made with a film camera, mostly in France, from the forests of the Massif Central to the Breton coasts. On the road, beside a river or in some secret hotel where particular, melancholic smells sleep, marvellous wallpapers. Comment's 'reverberation' is the story of a trajectory in space and time: the dream, the verb; the luminous reflection and the echo chamber; the observation of a signal and of its trajectory, between the moment of the shot and the moment of the exhibition. I re-read and crossed the images, as one might do with words and rhymes, so that they could dialogue differently, in the manner of a poem".

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
