In the footsteps of three cult works, Jack Kerouac's Tristessa, Malcolm Lowry's Under the Volcano and Antonin Artaud's The Tarahumaras, Nicolas Comment lived two months on residency in Mexico. Mexico City Waltz is above all a visual poem made of double pages in which the images rhyme with one another, a sort of equivalent of the "spontaneous prose" dear to Jack Kerouac, to whom the title refers. Far from a catastrophist, expected vision of the country, it pays tribute to the beauty and sensuality of present-day Mexico. We meet three young women, "brown as a berry" (Malcolm Lowry), who are the true heroines of the book; through them the whole of the capital appears in its intimacy, as if the megalopolis itself had been laid bare.
