This land of water, grass and wind cannot be told, only felt and lived to the rhythm of the river. In Mali, between Mopti and Timbuktu, at Sendégué, a small village of Peul herders and Bozo fishermen lost in the Niger's vast inland delta, the Peul's life is bound to their herds, to milk and the river's flood cycles that create pastures on this arid land; here, life is a gift of the river. The texts accompanying Bernard Descamps's photographs are extracts from Peul herders' poems, composed orally over years, memorised and recited at village festivals, collected and translated by CNRS research director Christiane Seydou.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
