This book is a guide, or rather a non-guide to travel. It speaks of neither history nor geography; in fact, it does not speak at all. It shows images, impressions and illusions, since photography above all makes visible the unsayable, proposing a wandering from Hokkaido to Osaka by way of Tokyo, Nara and Kyoto across journeys made between 1992 and 1995, an aimless journey whose only goal is the encounter with images, his own images, those that are within him and that he endlessly tries to bring forth: a silent journey of questions, tossed ceaselessly between one Japan and another, the Zen garden and the pachinko parlour, reality mingling with fiction.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
