On 26 April 1986 the worst conceivable accident of civil nuclear use to date occurred at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant. Just under ten years later, in 1995, the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum Dresden commissioned the photographer Volker Kreidler to document the consequences of the catastrophe for people, places and nature. In 2015 the photographer returned to the exclusion zone to document nature's reconquest through the predominant absence of humans, and in 2025 he travelled there again.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
