This book tells the story of Ukraine between hope and destruction, peace and war, from 2004 to 2024. Eighteen international photographers direct their gaze at two decades of Ukrainian history, from the Orange Revolution of 2004, through the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the beginning of the Russian war of aggression in February 2022, to the present. Their pictures show what was once home to Ukrainians, and what has been lost.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
