This selection of 22 French racing bikes from the 1930s to the 1990s makes no claim to completeness. It merely aims to exemplify the beauty and variety of the bikes designed in France during this period. The title quotes the motto of the speeding postman François from Jacques Tati's film Jour de fête (1949). The unstoppable human striving for faster, higher, further is also present in the history of cycling.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
