Norman Behrendt (*1981), Berlin, has photographed since 2014 newly-built mosques in the sprawling suburbs of Ankara and Istanbul. Behrendt's documentary images make clear how the country is developing from Atatürk's secular state into a religious state of Erdoğan's stamp. The sacred architecture stands symbolically for the religious-political change of the last 20 years, in which almost a thousand of these mosques were built per year. This small, inventively produced postcard book shows a selection.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
