During an invitation to Kaliningrad (formerly East Prussia), Lia Darjes discovered the small improvised market stalls at the roadsides of this neglected area, largely cut off from the development of modern Europe. The Oblast of Kaliningrad was a military restricted zone until 1991 and, since the end of the USSR, is a Russian exclave isolated between the EU members Poland and Lithuania. Old women offer, on the simplest improvised stands, what they produce by hand from their gardens or nearby woods.
