At 2:46 pm on 30 November 1954, Ann Hodges of Sylacauga, Alabama, was napping on her couch when a nine-pound, 4.5-billion-year-old meteorite crashed through the ceiling, bounced off her radio and bruised her thigh: the only well-documented case of a person struck by a rock from space. Taking the Hodges fall as its starting point, the photobook examines the meteorite as a mysterious physical object and the role that chance and accident play in our lives, inspired by the theory that collisions do not destroy but create. The visual material comes from "The Project Physics Course Handbook: Concepts of Motion", from Google image search and from H. H. Nininger's "Out of the Sky: An Introduction to Meteoritics".

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
