An homage to the act of collecting. The source material is an archive of 44 photographs of gladiolus flowers found in an issue of the Cornell Extension Bulletin "Gladiolus Studies" (December 1916, New York State College of Agriculture at Cornell University). The title plays on "By choice not chance—On Collecting", a chapter title from another plant publication in Wysocka's archive; it refers to collecting as well as to the structure and printing process of the book itself. Black-and-white plates were overprinted in two different layouts, one coincidental and one intentional, in an experiment in letting go of the artist's control and leaving half of the edit to pure chance. Each copy is unique, made of overprinted impressions in two layers of black Risograph ink and bound by the artist.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
