2026 marks ten years of Wysocka and Pogo's partnership as Outer Space Press, and "23" is, in their words, the DNA of the press: 23 of their books were xeroxed for it, 2,026 pages in all, and the page count of "23" is exactly 23% of that total. Inspired by the "23 enigma", which links the number to synchronicity, cosmic coincidence, chaos and fate, and by the Ouroboros, the serpent consuming its own tail, it draws on the DIY and bootleg culture of the 1980s and 90s: the whole layout, editing and printing were done with just two photocopiers, a Xerox WorkCentre 7425 and a Risograph MZ770, without computers. The book is dedicated to the memory of Jodi Stutz, whom the press calls an accidental pioneer of office-machine resistance.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
