Photographs made between 1992 and 2011, ranging from street snapshots to portraits of children, strangers and cats, and an insect crawling on a toe. After years of creating and exhibiting works of a disquieting nature, Shohhei Nomura felt that this no longer seemed right; unable to settle, he decided on a change of pace and began going through an enormous pile of photographs he had tossed into an empty photographic paper box. Coming across a vast expanse of ocean whose surface reflected dazzling light, the brightest, most boundless vista he had ever photographed, he kept it despite earlier dissatisfaction, and as if exhorted by this one picture he chose other rather tranquil scenes of landscapes, children, cats and group portraits. Despite the diversity of subjects and the long time span, a unifying, peculiar eeriness runs through the pictures: image noise becomes the manifestation of something deeper, people's shapes are not clearly defined and their outlines unravel into darkness, and there is always a hint of otherworldliness, yet no terror or threat; the dense eeriness is tranquil in nature.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
