In Natsukusa no Michi (roughly, Paths through the Summer Grass), Yudai Murakami photographed Tsuyama, in Okayama Prefecture, and its surroundings in the summer of 2015. The even-tempered photographs show landscapes, towns and details in a state of estivation, waiting out the last weeks of summer; humans are mostly absent, save for the odd statue-like figure sitting in a field. Part of the pleasure of landscape photography is imagining what lies at the end of the photographer's gaze: for the reader these places are unfamiliar and distant, yet the longer one looks the more they seem to be landscapes already seen, until one realises they may have been a fleeting dream, a short journey. It is Murakami's first book.
