The only international collection of the work of Ren Hang (1987-2017), who was born in Changchun, Jilin Province, and lived and worked in Beijing. In a brief career of six years his surreal, startling, gender-fluid images gained a huge international following and some 90 exhibitions; before this book he had self-published sixteen monographs in tiny print runs. The book covers his entire practice, from well-loved favourites to many never-before-seen photographs, showing naked subjects in unconventional outdoor settings such as trees, rooftops and urban locations, and it explores his pioneering approach to gender-fluid representation and creative expression amid political constraints in contemporary China.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
