Tillmans focuses his lens on the outside world—from London and Nottingham to Tierra del Fuego, Tasmania, Saudi Arabia, and Papua New Guinea. The result is a powerful and singular view of life today in diverse parts of the globe, seen from many angles. Says Tillmans, “My travels are aimless as such, not looking for predetermined results, but hoping to find subject matter that in some way or other speaks about the time I’m in.”

This Art Edition consists of 72 photos printed on 24 folded sheets, delivered in a signed and numbered portfolio. Tillmans selected photographs from the book edition and recontextualized them on 24 large-format folded sheets, each sheet becoming a large picture object with front, centerfold, and back. On some, the front and back form a whole picture when unfolded. The artist also chose some details which he enlarged to the full potential of information and detail available. Says Tillmans, “This is the first time I’m doing an oversized publication; in this case, the sheets are not bound—instead they stay light and it is almost like handling actual prints of mine.”

Though best known for his pioneering work in photography, Wolfgang Tillmans began experimenting with moving images in the 1980s and has worked consistently in video since the 2000s. His video practice explores time, abstraction, and live performance, with notable pieces like Lieber Pate (1987), an early Super 8 work, and later installations such as FR2 (2012), which layers fragmented footage into hypnotic loops. These videos often complement his photographic installations, creating immersive, multi-sensory environments that challenge perceptions of stillness and motion.

Beyond visual art, Tillmans is a passionate music enthusiast: he has composed and released several albums under his own name, including Anangelos (2021) and ORPH (2022), blending ambient electronica with experimental sounds. He also performs as a DJ and producer, infusing his sets with eclectic influences from rave culture to avant-garde beats, reflecting the same boundary-pushing spirit that defines his artistic practice.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
