At the Pointe du Raz there had always been, or almost, great slabs of rock advancing as far as possible into the sea, swept by foam and spray, with the island of Sein trembling on the horizon. For a long time there was only moorland in the wind, a few sheep, the lighthouse and the rare travellers curious about wild grandeur. [...] The Conservatoire du littoral, the State, Europe and local authorities take part in a programme of works. In 1991 the Conservatoire proposed that Raymond Depardon walk this site, magnificent in its wear, disorder and exhaustion. Ten years later he returned to the places, in the same season, that is before the tourist tides of summer, and chose a more personal approach: he did not try to find every place and every perspective again. The memory of his impressions of ten years earlier serves as counterpoint, as implicit reference for the images of this spring. He had shown us the violence of the elements, of disorder, of the raid, of desolation; he tells us today that the healing, the return of amenity, do not come about without another violence.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
