The Japanese edition of the French original, which sold 56,000 copies in France, by Raymond Depardon, one of the country's best-known photographers. On each double page a photograph and an essay face each other, in a unique construction of images and words, around the question of what errance, wandering, is. The world-famous photojournalist, freed from the framework and the constraints of how photographs are taken in that field, faces himself and the present on a journey whose end cannot be seen, and his steps follow the same path. About ten photographs taken in Tokyo are included, as in the original. Wandering, a word at once clear and vague, is usually associated with movement, walking in particular, with the idea of confusion and even with loss of self; yet at its core lies the very question of finding a place one can come to terms with.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
