The stake of this work, after the tragedies of twentieth-century Europe, is to envisage America as a land of welcome, a receptacle of the dramas of old Europe, an optimistic transposition of misery and of the brutality of wars and revolutions. Exile imposes on the American man a radical mutation that allows him, at the price of a denial of his own memory, to integrate a new conception of the world founded on the ephemeral, abandonment and perpetual movement, close to nomadism. Structured by his destiny as an exile, this people drew its strength and inventiveness from rupture. Nostalgia becomes deadly and the future too distant to dream of; what remains is the privilege of creating the instant and adapting. This photographic work, born of a strong bias, ignores the great movements of this "young civilisation" in which information, spirituality, environment, culture, diplomacy rhyme with consumption and profit.
