Once again Stéphane Duroy went on the trail of the tragedies that marked twentieth-century Europe. Here he brings to the surface the memory of the forced exile of many Portuguese. Today, adrift, the country struggles to preserve an identity built around the brilliant achievements of its past, around the impregnation of Catholicism, an omnipresent moral guardian in the Portuguese soul, and around the formidable legacy of Fernando Pessoa. This body of work, born of a strong bias, ignores the great movements of a young civilisation in which information, spirituality, environment, culture and diplomacy have become synonymous with consumption and profit. The twentieth century was a tragedy for the young: the First World War took part of them, emigration the rest, and the exodus of the population was among the highest in Europe.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
