Unfolding to nearly twenty-five feet, this book comprises a continuous photocollage capturing both sides of a mile-and-a-half stretch of a famous Los Angeles boulevard. To achieve the unbroken image, a motorized camera was mounted on the bed of a pickup truck. All that was after was the store-front plane, like a Western town -- paper in front, nothing behind it. The project later inspired the artist to document other streets across the city for more than fifty years.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
