New edition: interior unchanged, with a preface by Achille Filipponi and an extended interview with the author by Francesco Angelucci
Misurazioni is a tool-volume, a composite and ambiguous object: a complex route made of refined analogies, studies of form and anthropological immersions, and it can be considered the summa of Cresci's work. The word of the title carries the echo of the design dimension, of the relation to the object and to the perception of things. The title names a way of conducting and of living a piece of fieldwork in a precise and richly implicated setting, and at the same time the occasion for analysing a behaviour that concerns both the medium and social reality. The author first photographs objects in their own environment, then in the studio, measuring himself against the tradition of the south and against the creativity of the old people who had made them outside any commercial use; by setting the resulting frames side by side he creates analogies between marks, forms and meanings, showing how the relation between people and their environment produced a strong identity bound to a place, through values of use and beliefs. The second part follows a design course run by the Laboratorio Uno cooperative in Matera, whose aim was to intervene in artistic craft in order to create work alternative to the myth of the degree and the permanent job; from there comes the reflection on the historical and cultural identity of a region that belongs not only to the past but to a present that keeps exporting labour and intelligence.
