A long, absorbing account of the work Cresci made in Basilicata between the nineteen-sixties and the nineteen-eighties: a body of visual research in which the investigation of a territory, of social identity and of material culture are woven into an original and profound meditation on time. The volume is a homage, as the curator Marco Scotini writes, "to the great photography of Mario Cresci — heretical, contaminated, beside itself — and to the uninterrupted challenge of its author against the very principle on which the photographic specific is founded: that of fixing the image of an event in time, as a single and unrepeatable act." His stay in the south becomes the journey of a sedentary nomad who immerses himself in a world far from the one he came from, living in close contact with a community and a territory. The experiment on the medium continues through a reflection on the ambiguity of perception and on the semantic value of the image and its relation to time, to memory and to the archive. The extraordinary black and white series devoted to domestic interiors, to family groups, to everyday objects and to "photographs of photographs" are true archives of memory: in each frame the idea of memory concerns not only the content but the technique itself, in which there is no chronological accumulation and no linear passage, only repetition.
