Mario Lalau joins the tradition of street photographers who wander the cities adrift, like the flâneur, the wandering figure of Charles Baudelaire. At every corner turned, the chance of meeting the fortuitous and the unexpected is renewed. Going repeatedly through the same spaces in our habitual movements, we naturally stop seeing them in detail: the flow gradually becomes automatic and we come to see a whole that is the same, repetitive and dull, losing the ability to notice the subtle changes with which the sum of the days ceaselessly sculpts the landscape. As a direct effect of globalisation, metropolises also resemble one another more and more — in their shapes, their signs, the ordering of the flow of people and vehicles, the facades, the way trade is organised, the department stores and franchises that are always the same in São Paulo, Dallas, Berlin or Buenos Aires. What Lalau takes as his raw material is precisely what goes unnoticed by the weary eyes of passers-by, and with it he satirises the chaos and the vain attempts of people to organise life in the big city. His pictures turn out to be sculptural events produced where sociability and the loss of bearings meet in the urban fabric. The edition lets the reader make new connections between the images, by affinity or by contrast, altering the order of the pages and of the cover, so the author hands back to his readers the adventure that guided his own drift through cities around the world.
