Conceived as a portable monument, to be hung in public or private space

On 2 August 1980 a bomb in the second-class waiting room of Bologna railway station killed eighty-five people and injured two hundred. Between December 2013 and January 2014 Lenzi went back to that room and stopped travellers passing through over the Christmas holidays. Each person was given a card with the details of one of the victims and of the massacre, and was asked to identify with a victim of the opposite sex. The portraits that came out of those encounters were assembled as a monument in eighty-five parts, made for the new high-speed station in Bologna, where nothing commemorates the bombing. The book is a portable version of it, an edition of eighty-five that can be hung anywhere.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
