"During nine months I lived in Tel Aviv. During this period I met four young Jewish women who were born in the USA. They had all decided, at the age of eighteen, to go to Israel to do the military service. After completing the required two years of service, they decided to stay and live in this idyllic Middle Eastern city." (José Pedro Cortes) The pictures of the four women are interspersed with landscape and detailed views of the city — old cars, overgrown palm trees, porticos, puddles of water. Mixing colour and black and white, hard flash and natural light, the work creates a sense of ambiguity, placing the viewer between the intimacy of the portraits and the deserted city.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
