Mana is one of the fundamental ideas of the Polynesian worldview, a sacred force of supernatural origin: to have mana means to have influence, authority, the ability to act upon a situation, and the quality is not limited to individuals — people, governments, places, animals and inanimate objects can also possess it. The photographs were taken in the Portuguese prisons of Odemira, Tires and Santa Cruz do Bispo during the autumn of 2025. In those prisons women are not allowed mirrors, phones or cameras; dinner is at half past six and the return to the cells at seven.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
