"Fourteen kilometres south of Lisboa, where I live, is Costa da Caparica. During the last years I often found myself returning to this magnetic place." (José Pedro Cortes) Costa da Caparica is a strip of land that exists between the last stretch of civilisation and the beach. Here we wander through that territory: shacks, outmoded architecture, the remains of houses, dirt left by the tide, an agglomeration of sand, vegetation and streets — a peripheral, end-of-the-line location. We are flooded by a strange luminosity, a dazzling and mysterious light that imbues these spaces with a disconcerting and unreal atmosphere, like something seen while in a hypnotic state, encouraging a suggestive and paradoxical exploration of individual experience.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
