Introduction by Douglas Coupland

Ten years after the first, the same 21,110 words were put through the search engine again. What comes back is a fresh plunge into the disorder of the internet as it is now, with an introduction by Douglas Coupland.

In 2013 the two had replaced every word of the pocket dictionary with the first image the engine returned. Some were obvious, others comical, some plainly shocking; the illustrated dictionary showed up the prejudices and the limits of the machine and the relative poverty of what it called most relevant. That first volume was a record of the visual culture of its moment — but the internet does not hold still.

“As a computational photography of the entire Internet, it captures the vast scale of the odd and beautiful landscape of information we all share. And by doing so in the unusually dissonant format of a gargantuan printed book, it shows that our world can feel more united when we see instead of just search.” — John Maeda

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
