The monograph looks into the most characteristic themes of her manner and opens with the series of self-portraits, in which her severe gaze is reflected in mirrors and shop windows and her long shadow invades the frame.

There follow the sections given to the streets of New York and Chicago, to the portraits but also to the gestures, attitudes and postures of the people she photographed; particular attention is then paid to her interest in movement and to the kinetic sequences she made, to her extraordinary colour work and, above all, to the theme of childhood, so dear to her and with her all her life.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
