Preface by Laura Lippman
The fullest gathering of the black-and-white and colour work of the American whose pictures were discovered in 2007 by John Maloof. Her pull owes much to the mystery around her life and her work: the story of the mysterious nanny who became a media case shortly after her death in 2009 is known only in outline, just as only a small selection of her images and a handful of facts about her life have been circulated. With an introductory text by the writer and curator Marvin Heiferman, the volume explores and celebrates her life and work from a precise, up-to-date standpoint, examining what she made in the context of contemporary American street work. Drawing also on a series of interviews with people who knew her, it throws new light on her surprising output. The first part is a very full biography, accompanied by numerous pictures largely unpublished and by images of the personal effects that belonged to her and the objects she collected, never seen before. There follows a large gathering of more than two hundred and forty images, made above all between New York and Chicago, revealing the work and the story of an extremely private artist.
