México-Roma is an eclectic book unified by a single guiding thread: the vision of Graciela Iturbide. It consists of images of objects taken in Mexico City between 1974 and 2009 and in Rome in 2007, during the photographer’s stay as a guest of the Festival Internazionale di Roma. The origin of the book goes back to the exhibition presented in the Museo Archivo de la Fotografía FMAF) in Mexico City in 2009.

This publication, which has gone through all manner of vicissitudes, and of which only a few copies have been “salvaged,”‘ gathers mostly unpublished images of the Mexican and Italian capitals. It has been produced with modest means and published with the support of numerous individuals and institutions. The title was handwritten by Graciela herself on labels she bought in Bolivia.

Graciela Iturbide was the 2008 winner of the prestigious Hasselblad Award, officially presented at the opening of an accompanying exhibition in Göteborg, Sweden in October 2008.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Images and rights

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
