Combining photography, reportage, and experimental book design, The Newspaper is a timely reflection on information, labour, memory, and the future of print media. Created in collaboration with the 140-year-old Kyoto Shimbun newspaper, offering a rare and intimate portrait of one of the last surviving newspaper cultures in the world. The Newspaper is a photobook produced using the newspaper itself as its medium. Created in collaboration with the Kyoto Shimbun, a regional Japanese newspaper with over 140 years of history, it explores information as a physical and human process while documenting the newspaper industry. The work consists of thirteen newspapers bound together with removable brass fasteners, functioning as both a photobook and a collection of independent newspapers. Through its unique structure, the publication reflects on information, labour, memory, and what the physical limitations of producing and circulating news can tell us about contemporary society.

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
