This publication is the first title in THE AMERICAS, a new series by Fundación Magdalena comprising twenty titles dedicated to major women photographers from across the American continent. A deeply human exploration of childhood through the lens of one of the most important photographers of our time, Graciela Iturbide. Many of the photographs are presented here for the first time, offering a rare and moving insight into childhood as both a personal and collective experience. Revealing childhood as a universal territory shaped by play, imagination, vulnerability, and resilience, capturing fleeting moments of wonder, innocence, and complicity. Children appear as playful figures, witnesses, angels, and dreamers, often surrounded by animals, rituals, shadows, and landscapes that evoke a world suspended between reality and reverie. Reflecting Iturbide’s long-standing commitment to photographing communities from a place of respect, intimacy, and ethical engagement.

ABOUT

The project

SpineIndex is an archive of independent books on photography and visual culture: photobooks, publications, design books and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.

Covers, interior pages and descriptions are shown to introduce and identify the books, always crediting publisher, author and photographer and linking back to the publisher. We ask publishers for their permission, and we remove anything on request within 7 days. If you are a publisher, an author or a photographer and you want something changed or removed, write to info@spineindex.it.
