Piedras (Stones) presents previously unpublished works carried out over several decades by Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide. Using a 6×6 format camera, Iturbide has focused her lens on some particular piedras. Even if sometimes what she photographs is distinctly a stone, other times it is rather just something made out of stone, such as an old Italian city. For Piedras, Iturbide has recuperated a number of black and white images ‒ photographs that are as unique as they are beautiful ‒ captured on her many travels through Europe, Asia and America.

Graciela Iturbide (born 1942), a winner of the 2008 Hasselblad Foundation Award for Photography, has been acclaimed as one of Latin America’s greatest photographers for her photographic exploration of her native Mexico’s landscapes and inhabitants in stark black and white

ABOUT

SpineIndex is a digital platform dedicated to independent photobooks, photography publications, design books, and self-published editions — the kind of work that rarely makes it into bookshop windows or mainstream catalogues. It exists to document, connect, and keep visible a world of publishers, artists, and makers who operate outside conventional distribution. A living reference for anyone who takes this territory seriously — collectors, researchers, students, and the simply curious.
