In the winter of 2006, Graciela Iturbide spent twelve days in Mozambique documenting the strength and resilience of Mozambican women in their fight against AIDS, while also portraying the country’s rebirth and the hopes of a new generation of young people and children. During this journey, the renowned Mexican photographer encountered both ordinary and extraordinary people, discovering a place that reminded her in many ways of her own Mexico—a country capable of evoking serenity and unease, fragility and hope at the same time. The result is “Twelve Days / Dodici Giorni”, an intense and poetic photobook that captures, through Iturbide’s distinctive visual language, a deeply human and moving narrative. The book was also supported by the Community of Sant’Egidio, which in Mozambique developed the DREAM Sant’Egidio Project, an international program dedicated to AIDS treatment and prevention.
